The Witch of Portobello is the third book of Paulo Coelho that I read, the previous books really made me read more of his works but this one was a pretty big book for me then and I couldn't finish reading the first time, then I had to start from the beginning allover again. It took really long for me to complete the novel.
It is the story of a woman named Athena who was born in Transylvania to a Romani mother in a gypsy tribe without wedlock and was adopted by family in Beirut. Her forster parents loved her as their own daughter and provided everything she needs. However she had a part which was not contented with the way things were, she had the feeling that there was something missing in herself. The novel progresses with her spiritual journey and self discovery.
The title may give the impression that the novel is some kind of fantacy novel, but it is not. I it is realistic novel, with real life setting and characters. Although experiencing the state of trance is not part of the mundane, hence a person who tries to reach trance may be looked upon through the eyes of disbelieve.
I really enjoyed the book because it was very well written and its unconventional writing style. Instead of writing Athena's life from her point of view, which was the easiest way to explain her feelings and emotions, Athena's story is told from different people's point of view. This make the novel intresting and the character mysterious.
This is the kind of novel which will transform the way readers think about love, passion, joy and sacrifice. We have come across many incidents where women who follows her passion by breaking all the expectations of society being excommunicated by labelling them as witches, and we are also familiar with the historical events of witch hunting which is being mentioned in the novel as well. Athena was someone who realised the true femininity and she always followed what her heart said.
Novel also gives the message to follow our passion and do what makes you really alive, if we do so we can achive spiritual ecstacy or the state of trance. If you are a fan of Paulo Coelho, you should definitely read
