…whoever you are, or whatever it is that you do, when you really want something, it's because that desire originated in the soul of the universe. It's your mission on earth.

The Alchemist is the one of the very first novels that i have read. Every one was talking great things about this book and I decided to give it a try. I absolutely enjoyed reading it.

This book was originally written in Portuguese later it became a widely translated international bestseller. Author wrote this book in only two weeks. He explained that he was able to write the book at this pace is because the story was already written in his soul. It is the absolutely wonder full story and the style of narration that made a book which as written in just two weeks to became one of the international bestseller.

It is about the journey of a boy Santiago from Andalusia in Spain. He keeps getting the dream that there is a treasure waiting for him some where. He has the dream every time he sleeps under a sycamore tree that grows out of the ruins of a church. During the dream, a child tells him to seek treasure at the foot of the Egyptian pyramids. He had a comfortable life but somewhere in his heart he feels no matter what he should find the treasure. So he consults a gypsy women to interpret his dream and she tells him to go Egypt. As he begins his journey he meets a lot of people on the way. He travels through different regions and everything adds on to his experience. on his way he meets a king of Salem, he meets a lot of other people and everybody some or the other way nudge him to follow his dream.

The ending of the story makes it lot more impressive. The point of view is third person omniscient, though the narrator focuses on Santiago’s journey and it reads like an ancient myth or fable. Use of Dream and omen in the story makes it interesting and dream is also used as a technique of  foreshadowing. The centrality of personal legends, the unity of nature and the danger of fear comes as the central themes of the novel.

Just like alchemy which is the act of transforming any base metal in gold we need to find the secret to transform our self to a better person by maximizing our talent in order to achieve our destiny. everyone should read this book because it it makes us follow our dream and at embrace our destiny. It enforce the idea that you are not alone in you journey, if you truly, truly want something "all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it."
